10 Reasons Why I Love Scrum

I love Scrum

Every once in a while, I'll read another article declaring that Scrum is dead.

But when I look at their reasons, I often find that the problem isn't Scrum at all. It's that the team isn't using Scrum effectively in the first place. And ironically, the cure is often to use Scrum to improve how you're using Scrum!

For example, one common complaint is that Scrum involves too many meetings. Well, that's a great topic for your next Sprint Retrospective!

Another complaint is that teams can't get anything Done within a Sprint. That might be a sign of organizational impediments that need to be addressed, or that the team needs to break work into smaller, more manageable pieces.

These aren't necessarily reasons to abandon Scrum. They're opportunities to improve.

I've spent more than 20 years working with IT teams to deliver value. And in my experience, many of the teams with the highest morale, the best attitudes, and the strongest outcomes have one thing in common: Scrum.

So, despite all the articles declaring its demise, I'm still a fan.

Here are ten reasons why I love Scrum.

Conclusion

I admit it. I'm a Scrum enthusiast. But that's because I'm a pragmatist. I use what works.

That doesn't mean I think every team should adopt Scrum overnight or follow a cookie-cutter approach. Every organization has its own challenges, and teams need room to learn, experiment, and improve.

What matters is understanding why Scrum works and using its framework to help people collaborate, solve problems, and deliver value.

If your team is adopting Scrum, the Applying Professional Scrum course is a great way to get everyone started on the right foot. The whole Scrum Team can attend together, build a shared understanding of their accountabilities, and learn how to use Scrum effectively without wasting time in unnecessary meetings.

Scrum isn't magic. But when you use it well, it works.
